CORE VALUES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department offers training and services in Surveillance and Control of Hospital Infections and Sexually Transmitted Infections in addition to the residency training programme.

We render diagnostic services for management of infectious diseases within and outside the hospital.  Our Bacteriology Laboratory have been chosen as the Interim National Reference Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (NCDC) while TB Laboratory continues to serve as Regional Reference TB Lab for South West Nigeria.

 

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Medical Microbiology & Parasitology started as Department of Bacteriology located at the Adeoyo Maternity Hospital, Ibadan in 1948.  In 1957, the Department moved to its present location at University College Hospital, Ibadan. The virology and mycology units were added in 1960 with support from the World Health Organization.

ACTIVITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT:

Clinical: Activities undertaken during the period were:

  1. Processing of various clinical samples from various wards, clinics and outside hospitals.
  2. Sterility testing of various fluids for hospital use (Infusions, honey, etc.).
  3. Training of Resident Doctors (both rotating and specialist in Medical Microbiology).
  4. Training of Intern Medical Laboratory Scientist from various Universities, through rotational posting in various sections of the Microbiology laboratory.
  5. Surveillance of Hospital infections by the Infection Control Unit of the department in order to reduce nosocomial infections.
  6. Organization of weekly departmental laboratory rounds to effect improvement in laboratory service while ensuring health and safety of all staff.
  7. Daily consultation at the Special treatment Clinic (STC)
  8. Daily Medical Microbiology consult services for in-patients and weekly ward rounds.
  9. Round for continuous and regular monitoring of IPC activities and also to add value to patient management in ICU.
  10. Departmental meeting held in January & February to finalize our submission on how to improve services in STC.

Services During the quarter, various clinical samples from various wards, clinics and outside the hospital were processed to isolate, identify and determine the susceptibility pattern of the infectious agents for effective treatment/management of concerned cases.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS:-

Through our research collaborations, we have been able to achieve the followings:

  1. SETA (Severe Typhoid in Africa Program) Project provided equipment e.g. such BACTEC Blood Culture, minus 80 degree Freezer, Autoclave and Incubator to the Department.
  2. TB Lab. was recently renovated with funds from WANETAM consortium.   The renovation is towards achieving ISO Accreditation.
  3. Adeola Fowotade was appointed Infection Diseases Consultant attached to the recently commissioned Infectious Disease Centre.

 

Residency programme

Residency programme is fully accredited by NPGMCN (National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria). Our Residents are actively involved in the control and case management of the ongoing COVID – 19 Pandemic.

PPP (Public Private Partnership): We commence negotiation with Bio-mueriux for free supply of modern equipment such as Bact-Alert.

We are working on improvement in our turn-around time on most of our Laboratory reports.

 

CHALLENGES:

Listed below are challenges being faced by the department:-

  1. Structural decay: Leaking decking roof:  Roof of Residents Lab, Mycology Lab and Prof. Kehinde’s office leak during raining season, attempt to fix this using WANETAM project funds of which Prof Kehinde is the P. I. was not successfully.
  2. Unstable power supply: most of our equipment need to be on 24\7 power supply. Even though the department has a dedicated generator donated by IHVN through the Global Fund, the generator was unable to provide alternative steady power supply when there is power outage.  This was the reason why VITEK machine initially domiciled in our department by one of our collaborating partners  – Prof. Iruka Okeke P. I. of Genetic surveillance of AMR – Global research project was temporary moved to her Lab in U. I. as a result of unstable power supply and to meet her project  timelines.
  3. Inadequate toilet facilities: as a result of increase in number of staff and students in the department, there is an urgent need to provide more toilet facilities to maintain healthy working environment.
  4. Need for more equipment e. g. Biosafety cabinets to improve good working environment.
  5. The urgent need to improve water supply to the laboratories, washrooms and offices cannot be over emphasized.
  6. More personnel e.g. lab technicians are needed in order to alleviate work – related illness e.g. Chronic back pain
  7. Equipment: insufficiency of some essential equipment e.g. light microscope, incubator, autoclave and colorimeter. Some equipment need to be replaced and some need back-up to ensure that work is not hindered when one is faulty or under repairs.

 

 

Infrastructural:

  • Need safer environment for processing samples e.g more functional bio-safety cabinets.
  • The department needs a complete overhauling. Several pipes are leaking from the wards above as a result of aging.  The sinks, taps and toilet WC need to be changed.
  • The doors to several rooms in the laboratory need replacement.

Administrative:

  • We need more Laboratory Technicians & Laboratory Attendants to relieve the burden occasioned by shift duty.
  • A number of staff are complaining of back pain which have necessitated physiotherapy visits, the department is in dire need of chairs and tables appropriate for laboratory work.

 

RECOMMNEDATIONS:

  • Improvement on diagnosis and identification of isolates by procuring sufficient working materials as well as modern diagnostic equipment and kits.
  • Department need VITEK 2 Machine and Automated Blood Culture Equipment.
  • Ensuring more effort and better methods to reduce turn-around-time of results in order to improve patient’s management.
  • Ensuring a safer working environment by acquiring the necessary biohazard personal protective equipment for processing specimens.
  • Training and re-training of staff to improve efficiency.
  • Improving upon the accreditation ranking of the laboratory.
